WHO Raises Warning Over Critical Lack of Obesity Medications

Fewer than a tenth of patients that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, caution the global health agency as it publishes its first recommendations on the medications.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with thorough and lifelong care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to widespread access to the injections that can help people shift substantial weight, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Despite the current best projected case, the production of these medications might only reach approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The advice calls on countries and companies to increase availability, by strategies like licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the core component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Work

The injections imitate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance the sense of being full so individuals reduce food intake.

Individuals usually start to lose weight within a few weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Evidence points to people may put most of the weight back on within a year of discontinuing the treatment, because their normal hunger resume.

Being above a healthy weight raises your chance for contracting diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some cancers.

Obesity impacts people in countries worldwide and was linked to over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
