Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
